Ooops. Haven't been on in 6 months.

I read blogs every day, but can't find to blog myself. Probably doesn't matter anyway, because Jason is probably the only one that checks this site daily (he claims to check all his links every day), and then is disappointed when there's nothing new. Here's something new Jason!

Anyway, here's an article on why I'll never move to NYC.

You have to make $123,322 in NYC to live a $50,000 lifestyle in Houston. That's just outrageous to me. No thanks. Gimme my parking spaces, 1,000 sq. ft. apartment, and constant traffic.

Anyway, I'm always thinking about what I should blog about. I'm thinking food. Mostly so I can ramble too. Also, Because I talk about it constantly with Cynthia, Liz, and Jenn...pretty much all the girls I talk with on a daily basis. I'll try and blog more about places I eat around Houston or recipes I make. Not likely to contain yummy pictures like Smitten Kitchen, but hey, I'm not a prolific picture taker. I still have pictures on my camera from Carolyn's wedding (~6-7 months ago) that need to be uploaded.

So here's my first one.

Central Market started this new display where you can buy "parts" of food. Like if you need 1 or 2 celery ribs for dinner that night, you can stop by and pick up 1 or 2 celery ribs from the case. Also, they put their recipe kits next to it. Which is great because they do all the prep work for you, like chopping vegetables, and put it in this nice kit for you to take home. Also, they used to be scattered about the store, making them difficult to find. I've used it a couple times when I get them free with coupons, but never been that impressed.

So, they had their new display up on Friday and...samples. I'm a sucker for samples. Friday it was Thai curry. Yum. One of my favorite things. The rice was a little hard (that should have been my first clue), but still yummy. Ok, bought the kit.

I made it tonight and meh.... The sauce was watery and not enough rice. Maybe it would have helped if I didn't accidentally throw out the recipe. But that doesn't explain the lack skimping on ingredients. It was $7.49, but for the same price, I could have gotten take out from Thai Space and would have been double the portion. Maybe they were skimping on the rice because everyone is on a low-carb craze, but Asian people require at least two bowls worth...not 1/2. The sauce was thin.

A good curry should be thick and viscous. I didn't care for it. The vegetables were good after I added some water and stirred it around in the pan. After the water evaporated, I added the sauce. The sauce was still thin after letting it sit for a while. However, some of the good things include the flavors and the amount of vegetables. The flavors were actually dead on and quite yummy. The vegetables included zuchinni and bamboo shoots, and were yummy when they were softened. I think the lack of rice and the runny sauce really disappointed me. I'm a huge proponent of thick sauces. More rice and a thicker sauces would totally make it worth it.

a kit for curry?! it sounds like a setup for failure. i dont know about thai curry but watching my mom and my aunt cook cambodian curry (which is a lil similar) makes cooking on those cooking shows look elementary. really good curry requires a ton of spices and fresh ingredients (e.g., my mom whacks down lemongrass stalks from our backyard). there is no way a central market kit could replicate that goodness!

i miss you fung. come to visit? =)
